Bluefield paper’s Bill Archer honored in McDowell

WELCH, W.Va. —  Bluefield Daily Telegraph senior editor Bill Archer was honored on Friday during the 19th annual McDowell County Law Day Celebration with the announcement that he will receive a Liberty Bell Award, in recognition of his service to the people of McDowell County.

Archer has covered McDowell County news for three decades with both the Twin State News Observer as well as the Telegraph. In addition to his newspaper reporting, Archer has authored three pictorial history books on McDowell County and its people.

 In making the presentation, McDowell County Circuit Court Judge Booker T. Stephens noted that Archer has been a faithful reporter of positive events in McDowell County, like the 19-year tradition of the Law Day celebration. Stephens also expressed the court’s appreciation for his efforts on behalf of the people of McDowell County.

Stephens explained that the Liberty Bell award was established more than 40 years ago to acknowledge outstanding community service. He said that there is no specific criteria for the presentation, but groups often present it to a layperson — man or woman — who has promoted better understanding of the rule of law and have encouraged greater respect for the law.
