West Virginia students, including Bridgeport high schooler, selected for United States Senate youth program

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — At Bridgeport Middle School, now-Bridgeport High School senior Emma Romano recalls writing to, and looking up to, federal elected leaders, and she dreamed of talking with them.

She, along with St. Albans High School senior Olivia Hindman, will get her chance March 14-17 as two of the 104 high school students from throughout the United States selected for the 59th annual United States Senate Youth Program.

“For me, this is an amazing opportunity,” Romano said, “to see how the process works and collaborate with the senators, get a better understanding of what they do daily.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Washington Week will be held virtually, but Romano is slated to be able to meet online and discuss policy with federal leaders — including U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of Cabinet agencies and senior members of the national media…
