U.S. Sen. Manchin announces more than $1 million for five rural development projects in West Virginia

Washington, DC – On Dec. 12, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $1,031,517 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program for five West Virginia projects. The initiatives will rehabilitate 17 homes for low-income individuals in southern West Virginia, renovate a Wheeling processing facility for farm fresh products and purchase equipment for the Barbour County Law Enforcement Department.

“I’m pleased the USDA is investing more than $1 million in these five vital projects that will help ensure safe housing for West Virginians in need, bolster local food systems, and equip the Barbour County Police force with new technology,” said Senator Manchin. “I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of these projects for years to come. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue working to ensure our rural communities have the resources they need to thrive.”

Individual awards listed below:

  • $763,057 – Grow Ohio Valley
    • This funding will be used to renovate a warehouse in Wheeling which will serve as processing facility for fresh food products.
  • $105,280 – Southern Appalachian Labor School
    • This funding will support rehabilitating 10 homes for low and very low-income individuals in Fayette, Nicholas, Kanawha, Clay, and Raleigh counties.
  • $105,280 – Community Action of Southern Easter West Virginia
    • This funding will support rehabilitating five homes for low and very low-income individuals in Mercer, Monroe and Summers Counties.
  • $50,000 – Southern Appalachian Labor School
    • This funding will support rehabilitating two homes for low and very low-income individuals in Fayette County.
  • $7,900 – Barbour County
    • This funding will be used to purchase 13 V300 model Motorola body-worn cameras that are compatible with the Barbour County Law Enforcement Department’s current radios.
