Gated Greenbrier community attracting Charleston investors

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The developers of a gated community in
the mountains overlooking The Greenbrier say they’ve found a market
where they least expected — at home in West Virginia.

Mike Greenway of The Retreat of White Rock Mountain said that though
many investors hale from as far away as Hawaii, home markets in
Charleston and other large West Virginia communities have proven
lucrative, and a focus on promotion will be shifted there at least in
the near future.

“I’m not sure this was something the founder expected, but it makes
sense: The Greenbrier Valley is recognized as a vacation destination.
Even our far-flung investors have ties to West Virginia,” Greenway
said, “and many Charleston-area residents are looking for the same
investment.”

Ascending the flanks of White Rock Mountain between Lewisburg and
White Sulphur Springs, the community offers much that investors might
think bankable — proximity to the I-64 expressway, state and national
forests and world-class dining, shopping and golf.

Greenway said mountaintop panoramas and access to The Greenbrier have
sold many visitors and attracted the development’s founder in the
beginning.

Established in 2005 by Charles Ausburn, the retreat opened with
aplomb, though growth was cut short by the Great Recession and
Ausburn’s untimely death. In 2013, however, John Patten of The Patten
Companies and partners Will and Mark Adkins at The Waterfront Group
moved quickly to reinvigorate the project.

The Retreat also includes a multi-million dollar clubhouse with a full- service spa and underground utilities that protect the development’s
wooded lots.

Greenway says the development will man a kiosk in the Charleston Towne
Center through January.

The Retreat is a drive of approximately an hour and 50 minutes from
Charleston and five miles from Interstate 64 at White Sulphur Springs.
