CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Jim Justice announced on Dec. 1 that he has appointed Greg Wooten to the West Virginia State Board of Education.

“Greg Wooten is a fantastic addition to the West Virginia State Board of Education,” Gov. Justice said. “With his wealth of experience and dedication to our great state, he will bring fresh perspectives to our education system. I’m thrilled about the positive impact he will help make for the students and families of West Virginia.”

Wooten will succeed James Wilson for a term ending in November 2032.

Greg graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Engineering in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering. He began his career at Zapata Fuels, Inc., working in planning and permitting before advancing to production and operations roles with subsidiary companies Ridgeway Fuels and Triple Elkhorn Mining in eastern Kentucky.

In 1982, Greg returned to his hometown in Logan, West Virginia, joining Dingess Rum Properties, where he managed various landowner interests for 25 years across coal, oil, gas, aggregate, and timber holdings. He later moved to Natural Resource Partners, LP in 2007, initially serving as Vice President and Regional Manager. Over the years, he climbed the ranks to become Senior Vice President & Chief Engineer, overseeing the company’s extensive portfolio in 38 states, covering around 10 million mineral acres, primarily consisting of coal royalty properties and other assets.

Greg has also been active in his local community as a past member of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce (Board Member), the Chief Logan Recreation Foundation (Board Member), the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Authority (founding Board Member), the Hatfield-McCoy Convention and Visitors Bureau (Board Member) and President of the Logan County Board of Education.

Greg and his wife Kim have two daughters, Olivia, Linsey (Craig) and two grandsons (Jagger and Croix).
