CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Jim Justice proposed an agreement Tuesday he said he hopes will end the teacher-school service personnel walkout, however, legislative leadership says it has some doubts about his proposal.
Justice announced the proposal that calls for a 5 percent pay raise for teachers and school service personnel and a 3 percent raise for state employees in a Tuesday evening press conference. He said teachers will continue to be out of school on Wednesday as a “cooling off” day and the plan is for teachers to return to work Thursday.
Justice said he had a change in heart.
“to be honest, I’ve not been looking at this correctly,” he said. “I’ve said many times we should look at education as an economic, driver but maybe I was looking at it as what was the prudent thing to do and not looking at education as an investment.”
Justice met with union leaders Tuesday afternoon, where during a break they reported that progress had been made.
