Sen. Manchin and responsible action on Iran

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hurrah for Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who is lining up against the Republican clamor for war with Iran.

On the CBS “Face the Nation” show, Manchin indicated that he supports the treaty negotiated by Secretary of State John Kerry, which will let international inspectors comb Iran to guarantee that no nuclear bomb materials are produced.

“I’m leaning very strongly toward that because of the options that I have,” he said. “The only other option is go to war, and I’m not ready to send our people into harm’s way again.”

Don’t forget: A dozen years ago, Republicans demanded invasion of Iraq on grounds that it was creating horror weapons and would give them to terrorists to unleash on America. The Bush-Cheney White House seized Iraq, triggering a war that killed 4,500 young Americans, cost U.S. taxpayers $1 trillion, and left Iraq a basket case saddled by civil war and prey to terrorists.

Absurdly, it turned out that Iraq never had weapons of mass destruction, after all — so the war was unnecessary…
