Letter to the Editor: Judge Merrick Garland Nomination

Editor:

Here we go again, our Senator Joe Manchin forgetting or overlooking why we elected him.  As I recall, you actually shot the Cap and Trade Bill, vowing to protect the people of West Virginia from the overreaching power of Washington elites.  With our businesses, our jobs, and our way of life are at risk if liberal activist Judge Merrick Garland is appointed to the highest court in the nation.  Right when the EPA and the Obama administration have issued the final rules on the Clean Power Plan and Methane Emissions, both with the potential of finally ending the extractive industries in West Virginia.  “Say it ain’t so Joe”, you want to put on the highest court in the land a judge that tips the scales of justice toward those interests that say leave it in the ground.

Garland has time and time again sided with entrenched bureaucrats, expanding the federal government over the interests of the business community and job creators.  President Obama knows that Garland is a guaranteed liberal vote for future cases, shifting the court in an anti-business, pro-regulation direction that could undermine West Virginia’s economy for decades to come.  “Say it ain’t so Joe”, you’d turn your back on the legacy of Justice Antonin Scalia by appointing a left-wing justice that will have major repercussions to the vitality of our state and our nation.

President Obama knows that Garland is a guaranteed liberal vote for future cases, shifting the court in an anti-business, pro-regulation direction that could undermine West Virginia’s economy for decades to come. We cannot afford to take a chance on Judge Merrick Garland and allow President Obama to construct the most liberal Supreme Court in over 50 years.  The hardworking people of West Virginia are counting on you, Senator Manchin, to make the right decision for our state and our future.   You’d put Merrick Garland on the US Supreme Court, “Say it ain’t so, Joe”.
