Here’s hoping Olympics serve to unify the world

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — It’s hard not to feel a little uneasy about the Winter Olympics which are being held in Sochi, Russia.

The venues are only a couple hundred miles from Chechnya, which has fought two wars against Russia in the last 20 years. And the games are close to Dagestan, onetime home to the brothers who planted bombs at the Boston Marathon last spring.

Security is a big question mark. We hope violence will not visit these games as it did in Munich and Atlanta. Security is always a big concern at the Olympic Games, and it’s no different in Sochi.

And there are the early reports of less-than-luxurious accommodations for the athletes, who will be in grim- looking dorm rooms with as many as three twin beds and little else.

Many of the hotels are not finished, and journalists have tweeted pictures of brown tap water…
