Common Core to prepare students for next step

An editorial from The Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — We’re deeply concerned about the casualties of a battle of political buzzwords, where elected officials seem to be trying every tactic to disrupt educational progress because of two little words.

Common Core.

Just stringing those two words together seems to evoke a lot of emotion from voters, which fuels eager politicians who want to eliminate Common Core standards from the classroom.

There are some fundamentally flawed things about eliminating the standards: No one seems to really understand them, though they are very opposed to them, and no one seems to have any idea for what standards should replace Common Core, but they want to get rid of it.

The latest political attack has been a series of lawsuits, first filed against state agencies and former Gov. Joe Manchin and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to block funding of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, SBAC, comprised of a group of states that have adopted the Common Core standards. The suit was filed by Berkeley County Republican Delegate Mike Folk. In June, attorneys for the state sought dismissal of the suit, referring to it as a “purely political attack.”

We couldn’t agree more…
