Truckload of donated clothing back in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — A trailer load of used clothing intended for flood victims in the Greenbrier Valley ended up at the Union Mission in Bluefield Wednesday.

Craig Hammond, director of the mission, said a load that had been collected by Bill Cole Automall had to be redirected as a precautionary measure and because much of the used clothing being donated had been taken to a dump in the flood zone.

According the Federal Emergency Management Administration website, used clothing is not something that should be donated during a disaster.

“Used clothing is rarely a useful item to collect and send into the disaster area because it is hard to clean, sort, pack, transport, store, and distribute,” FEMA’s website said. “Mounds of clothing take up valuable warehouse space and frequently end up being discarded…
