Thousands in W.Va. sign up for health plans

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — More than 12,000 West Virginians selected health insurance plans in the first month of open enrollment for health care plans taking effect on Jan. 1. About 46 percent of those who enrolled in the Health Insurance Marketplace plan for 2015 had previously been enrolled in the program, while 54 percent had signed up for the first time, according to the latest enrollment figures released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday.

Among the 37 federally-facilitated insurance marketplaces, West Virginia had the six fewest people enroll in the program during the latest enrollment period. Alaska, Wyoming, Delaware, South Dakota and North Dakota all had less than 10,000 people enroll during the same time period.

Virginia, Michigan and Illinois experienced the highest number people who signed up during the latest open enrollment period, with each state experiencing more than 120,000 enrollments.

Nationwide, more than 6.4 million people selected health insurance plans or re-enrolled during prior to the Dec. 15 deadline for plans set to take effect on Jan. 1.
