Six Mercer County hotels try pet fish program

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Something fishy is making travelers’ stays in some of Mercer County’s hotels a little more memorable.

Six of Mercer County’s hotels recently started offering their guests a little companion, a beta fish, that can stay in their rooms. Executive Director Jamie Null of the Mercer County Convention & Visitors Bureau said she got the idea when talking to other travel professionals about making visitors’ stays more memorable.

“They were talking about this very, very fancy hotel, and they did the same kind of program,” Null recalled. “They (guests) could adopt a fish for the night, and they talked about how memorable it was and said it was unique to be offered a fish.”

Null said she remembered the idea and as the weather improved, she thought about trying it in Mercer County. Many times travelers stay while on their way to or from destinations like the beach or Disney World. Others come for longer stays while on business or attending functions like a wedding or family reunion.
