BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The Kentucky Derby was run last weekend, but this weekend, Buckhannon will be the place for horses as the West Virginia Strawberry Festival gets underway with two equine events.
The Horse & Carriage Parade will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday on Strawberry Lane (W.Va. 20).
“We have several really nice horse and carriage folks coming in,” said Carol Long, a festival past president who does publicity for the festival, which will run Saturday through May 17.
The parade will feature 15 horse and carriage units, as well as about 20 riding groups, festival volunteer Susie Miller said.
“We have two large horse riding groups that are coming, and there are 50 riders in one of them,” Miller added.
Those 50 riders will be members of the American Barrel Racing Association.
While they will not demonstrate barrel racing, Miller added, “from what I understand, some of them have flags that they will be carrying.”
The 2015 Strawberry Festival will officially begin with an opening ceremony at noon Saturday…
