BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Bluefield native Dr. John F. Nash Jr., and Canada-born American Louis Nirenberg have been named as joint winners of the 2015 Abel Prize, a prize that has been awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences & Letters since 2003, and is named in memory of Norwegian mathematician, Niels Henrik Abel.
The academy recognized Nash, 86, and Nirenberg, 90, “for striking and seminal contributions to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and its applications to geometric analysis,” according to a press release announcing this year’s Abel Prize laureates. The Abel Prize is considered the Nobel prize in mathematics.
Nash, a senior research mathematician at Princeton University, and his long-time colleague, Nirenberg, of New York University, will share a prize of six million Norwegian kroners (about $765,000 U.S. dollars) from Norway’s King Harald at a ceremony on May 19 in Oslo…
