At 14 years old, Alayna Moyer of Pennsboro is making her mark in the baking industry.
PENNSBORO, W.Va. — Alayna Moyer of Ritchie County has proved it is never too early to start a company.
At 14, Moyer started her own bakery, Alayna’s Sweet Treats, and makes a wide range of cupcakes and cakes.
“I just randomly decided I wanted to do it. So I called my mom up and asked if it was OK,” Moyer said.
All of Moyer’s recipes are passed down from her grandmother, Marion Moyer. “They are her recipes with a little twist,” Moyer said. Her chocolate cake recipe dates back to Word War II.
The bakery is receiving a lot of interest with the help of her family and the Facebook page “The Mort Report” run by Brian Morton, according to Moyer. She has had people from Wisconsin and Massachusetts requesting her baked goods.
The baked goods have been popular enough for Moyer to purchase her own camper from where she runs her bakery.
Moyer’s father, Herb, is remodeling the camper. He is adding a baker’s oven and service window. He has upgraded the counter tops, floor and sink.
Fresh paint on the inside has been added by her mother, Kelley. The outside will be painted over the next few weeks, said Moyer.
The camper will be Moyer’s sole place for baking. “My mom kicked me out of the kitchen,” Moyer said laughing.
Moyer has made enough of a profit to have the need to purchase a business registration certificate. Moyer received her certificate at the beginning of last month. Alayna’s Sweet Treats has been to numerous events and will attend shows around Parkersburg, Morgantown and Clarksburg with her new camper.
“I have already made cakes for about four weddings,” Moyer said. She has done a couple of catering jobs.
The next stop for the mobile bakery was Saturday at the Spring Craft Fair in Harrisville. Moyer will be traveling to Morgantown for the West Virginia Bites and Brews judging competition on April 23.
