Brian Woofter, owner of Teays Valley’s Goin’ Postal, has been collecting flags for the American Flag Replacement Project for seven years.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With Flag Day coming Saturday, Brian Woofter, owner of Goin’ Postal in Teays Valley, is getting to replace hundreds of worn out American Flags.
“The idea came from Headquarters and it was something all the franchise could join in if they wanted to and I thought it was a great idea,” Woofter said. “It’s just been a great program and a great benefit to the community as well, and it encourages people to come and exchange it.”
The American Flag Replacement Project allows people to receive one free three-foot by five-foot American flag in return for a dilapidated, worn flag. Woofter said the project has become a year-round activity at his store, but they try to emphasize people come in around Flag Day, which falls on Saturday, as well as on Independence Day. This is the seventh year he has participated with the project and says he enjoys giving flags away.
“Last year I hit a milestone as I went over 1,000 flags. I’ve probably given around 1,100 (flags) at this point,” Woofter said. “The local VFW will sometimes transport (the old flags) to another location where they have flag retirement ceremonies and on occasion they will get with the Boy Scouts (to dispose of them properly)…
