Mercer County board may have to cut 17 positions

PRINCETON, W.Va. — When a reduction in Mercer County’s school workforce and personnel transfers are completed for the next school year, between seven to nine teaching positions could be gone along with up to eight service positions.

Personnel reduction in force and transfers were on the agenda for this week’s meeting of the Mercer County Board of Education. The board had to consider the possible loss of positions after learning that $350,000 of state funding could be lost.

The board passed both measures, Superintendent Dr. Deborah Akers said Wednesday. Based on current state law, the board was able to reassign a number of people into positions that would be available next year.
