Gas under $2 driving W.Va. customers into Va.

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Virginia motorists are staying close to home and West Virginia drivers are crossing the state line to take advantage of something they have not seen in years — gasoline prices below the $2 mark.

People visiting the Mercer Mall on Monday morning said they were taking advantage of the lower prices at the gas pumps. Chuck Rorrer, 49, of Glenwood, said he was not driving more thanks to lower gasoline prices, but he was making trips into Virginia to buy his gasoline. He wondered why another type of petroleum-based fuel wasn’t going down in price, too.

 “I have a question: Figure out why diesel fuel is a dollar more than gasoline when it’s a byproduct of gasoline,” he said.

Even motorists who do not live close to the state line are making a point of going to Virginia when it’s time to fill up their gas tanks.

“I have,” a local woman who declined to give her name replied when asked if she drove to Virginia so she could pay less for gasoline. “I’m from McDowell County and every time I come to Mercer County, I fill up.”

Prices below $2 a gallon are something motorists had not seen in years.
