What to look for during the 2025 legislative session

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s legislative session begins on Feb. 12, and various bills that may affect the University will see the West Virginia State Capitol’s floor. 

Travis Mollohan, associate vice president for Government Relations and Collaboration, said the University is watching out for potential legislation that could address food insecurity on college campuses, target Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) standards in educational institutions, increase insurance premiums for state employees and enhance protections for WVU Athletics. 

Hunger Free Campus Act

The Hunger Free Campus Act, which aims to address and combat food insecurity on higher education campuses, failed to pass the House of Delegates last spring during the regular session due to language within the text of the bill and a lack of time during the legislative session, according to Mollohan. 

He said some legislators did not want state assistance information, such as social welfare programs, as part of this initiative.
