CHARLESTON (WV News) — A bill defining terms related to sex and gender in West Virginia code completed the legislative process Tuesday.

The House of Delegates concurred with a change made in the state Senate removing an amendment in Senate Bill 456, then approved the bill’s final passage.

SB 456 now goes to the desk of Gov. Patrick Morrisey for his consideration.

The legislation would codify the definitions of terms such as “sex,” “male” and “female” in an effort to “preserve women’s restrooms, multiple-occupancy restrooms or changing rooms, and sleeping quarters for women in facilities where women have traditionally been afforded privacy and safety from acts of abuse, harassment, sexual assault and violence committed by men.

The amendment removed from the bill in the Senate would have let health care providers examine children for the purposes of determining their biological sex without parental consent.
