West Virginia GOP chairwoman condemns anti-gay comments; committees nix LGBT protection bills

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state GOP chairwoman broke her silence Monday and condemned a Republican delegate’s comments comparing the gay community to the Ku Klux Klan.

Delegate Eric Porterfield, R-Mercer, first made the remark in a Friday morning interview, and has since repeated it on media outlets around the state. He reiterated it after emerging from a private meeting with the Speaker of the House Monday afternoon as well.

“In recent days, Delegate Eric Porterfield has made comments that are hateful, hurtful, and do not reflect the values of our country, our state, and the Republican Party,” said GOP Chairwoman Melody Potter in an emailed statement. “These comments are unacceptable and we denounce them. They have no place in America.”
