MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Higher education can open the door to a world of possibilities for West Virginia’s young people. Hundreds of 4-H’ers and students will have an opportunity to learn how they can find their path to those possibilities and to West Virginia Universityduring the 2018 WVU Day at the Legislature. The event, hosted by WVU and WVU Extension Service will take place at the Capitol in Charleston Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The WVU Day at the Legislature will feature interactive displays, activities and exhibits for students aimed a piquing an interest in higher education. Students and visitors will learn about scholarships, how to choose a career, get information on WVU camps, talk with current students about life at WVU, interact with faculty and much more. Additionally, 4-H’ers, representatives from WVU’s colleges/units and others will meet their state representatives, get a peek into the legislative process and participate in a special recognition by the House and Senate of WVU and WVU Extension programs, including 4-H.
“Helping our young people ‘see’ how WVU can help them pursue their dreams is an important role WVU Extension plays as part of our educational outreach throughout the state. This year’s exhibits allow our 4-H’ers and other visitors to experience various aspects of life at WVU, learn about different career options and explore how they can chart their path to the University,” said Steven Bonanno, dean and director, WVU Extension Service. “As always, this event also provides an opportunity for students to gain insights into our legislative process and make those personal connections with our state leaders.”
Many of WVU’s units will be present during the event to showcase and educate visitors about opportunities at the University. Some of the units that will be at the event include the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, College of Creative Arts, College of Education and Human Services, College of Law, School of Pharmacy, WVU Admissions, WVU Extension Energy Express, WVU Health Sciences, WVU High School ACCESS, WVU Institute of Technology, WVU Jackson’s Mill and Farmstead, WVU Potomac State and other WVU Extension programs.
This year, WVU also has partnered with Kanawha County Schools to help other youths participate in WVU Day at the Legislature. Students from Andrew Jackson Middle School will be visiting the Capitol and taking part in the morning’s activities. That afternoon, WVU President E. Gordon Gee will return with students to Andrew Jackson Middle to participate in an assembly where he will talk about the University, the value of higher education and meet with students and teachers.
