SPENCER, W.Va. (WV News) — For generations, one sound has served as an iconic reminder of local history and tradition in Spencer — the powerful blast of a train steam whistle.
Now located at the Armacell manufacturing plant, that distinct sound continues to echo through town, connecting current residents to the town’s past.
The whistle’s roots run deep and can be traced back to the old Spencer State Hospital, which first opened its doors in 1893. During its long operation, the whistle became an integral part of the hospital’s daily rhythm and, by extension, the town itself.
