FAIRMONT — Richard Heldreth, a correctional officer at Hazelton Federal Correctional Complex, has felt the effects of the government shutdown.
“It’s hard,” he said. “I started cutting back before Christmas in anticipation of this happening, and canceled plans throughout Christmas.”
On Monday, he and about 10 other prison employees attended a roundtable discussion on the government shutdown hosted by U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin at the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center Exhibition Hall in Fairmont. In addition, many other federal employees affected by the shutdown also were in attendance, filling chairs in a large horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement.
