APPLE GROVE, W.Va. (WV News) — Construction of Nucor Corporation’s $3.1 billion sheet steel mill in Mason County is progressing steadily, with operations expected to begin in 2027, according to company officials.

The mill spans 1,700 acres between W.Va. Route 2 and the Ohio River and is set to become one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly steel production facilities in the world. It will feature electric arc furnaces and galvanizing lines, with a planned output of up to 3 million tons of sheet steel annually. The facility will serve the automotive, construction and industrial sectors.

Nucor has also purchased additional land on the opposite side of Route 2 for support operations. Appalachian Power plans to construct a new substation on that property to meet the mill’s electricity demands, particularly for its arc furnaces.
