APPLE GROVE — The $4 billion Nucor Steel West Virginia mill under construction is about 60% finished and on schedule for completion late next year, Nucor Corp. officials said in their quarterly call last month.
The mill at the Mason County community of Apple Grove, along W.Va. 2 about 50 miles northwest of downtown Charleston, will be the largest mill of the largest steel producer in the U.S., Nucor officials say. It will use scrap steel delivered by barge and rail. Scrap will be melted to make new sheet steel.
Nucor has other production facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Indiana and Arizona that are under construction or ramping up for production later this year or next year. Apple Grove is the largest project Nucor is undertaking, and it will be the last capital project of those now under construction to go into production.
