CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It’s the end of one era and the beginning of another for West Virginia government.

The state’s two-term governor, Jim Justice, is set to be sworn in as the state’s next U.S. Senator and the current attorney general, Patrick Morrisey, will soon become the state’s 37th governor.

Morrisey, during a November press conference, said he would be sworn in Jan. 13.

With a new slate of officials taking office in January, the annual 60-day session of the West Virginia Legislature won’t begin until Feb. 12. The Legislature will assemble on Jan. 8 to formally elect leaders and swear-in newly elected members.

Republicans, who already had super-majorities in the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, gained additional seats during the Nov. 5 election. When the regular session begins, there will be just two Democrats in the Senate and just nine Democrats in the House.
