New Cumberland Fall Riverfest starts Saturday

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va.  — Hancock County will be ushering in autumn this weekend with the ninth-annual New Cumberland Fall Riverfest.

More than 50 vendors have registered to take part in the festival, to be held Saturday and Sunday along River Avenue in New Cumberland.

Activities will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Riverfest 5K Walk/Run, sponsored by the New Cumberland Park Board and benefiting Oak Glen High School’s athletics program.

Entertainment for Saturday will include the Oak Glen Marching Band, which will perform the national anthem as part of the opening ceremonies, and then play until noon; Kent Cox and Fred Ludovici at 12:30 p.m.; Michele’s Dance Studio at 2 p.m.; the Capitol Music Hall’s Stage Band at 4 p.m.; and Easy Street Band at 6 p.m.

The Riverfest Car Show will begin at noon Saturday, in the Firemen’s Field, with proceeds going to the New Cumberland Food Closet.

A fireworks display will be held Saturday night.

Events will resume at 11 a.m. Sunday with a church service, with assistance from Trinity United Methodist Church.

Brad Gibson will perform at noon, followed by the Little Miss New Cumberland Pageant. The John Edwards Band will play at 2:30 p.m., helping to close out the weekend.

Also part of the festival, the Hancock County Arts Council will hold its Community Art Show and Sale in the old city building.

The children’s art show will be juried, with prizes awarded.

Adult artists who are participating in the art show and sale must register their art between 3-6 p.m. Friday at the old city building. Artwork must be framed and include a wire on the back for proper hanging. Any artist wishing to sell their work must include contact information and price on each piece submitted.

Members of the Arts Council will lead two painting classes for area youth — at noon at 3 p.m. — on Saturday, and an adult class at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The cost of the classes is $10 per person, and those interested in participating must pre-register by calling either Joyce Beatty at (304) 564-5200 or Nancy Wright at (304) 387-5658.

There is no admission price for the Riverfest. Free parking will be found throughout the downtown at Firemen’s Field, the VFW and City Park.
