Judicial Investigation Commission publicly admonishes Judge Codispoti

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Judicial Investigation Commission has published a public admonishment of Logan Circuit Judge Kelly Gilmore Codispoti regarding a matter pertaining to Chris Trent’s lawsuit against the Logan County Commission.

In a document from the Judicial Investigation Commission dated Dec. 11, Codispoti was found to be in violation of several codes of judicial conduct relating to compliance with the law, confidence in the judiciary, giving precedence to the duties of judicial office, external influences on judicial conduct, competence, diligence and cooperation, and responsibility to decide. According to the ruling, the Commission chose to admonish her — which, in the legal world, is a strong warning — instead of bringing formal charges because she admitted to misconduct and had not ever been previously disciplined.

The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by Chris Trent, the county’s former grant facilitator, in March 2024 against the Logan County Commission. Trent filed the lawsuit over alleged violations of the Open Governmental Meetings Act.
