CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two weeks after the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency began the process of eliminating the jobs of at least 2,000 U.S. Forest Service and about 1,000 National Park Service workers nationwide, little is known about how the firings affected employees of those agencies in West Virginia.
The job cuts account for about 6% of the total U.S. Forest Service workforce and 5% of all National Park Service employees.
Public affairs officers at the Monongahela National Forest and New River Gorge National Park and Preserve referred questions about how many West Virginia jobs were lost to their regional and national headquarters, which, as of Friday, had produced no state- or park-specific answers.
A similar request to the office of Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., failed to yield results.
