High school athletes’ opioid use a growing concern

BECKLEY, W.Va. — As Americans have learned in the past few years, the opioid epidemic affects people from all walks of life, from all geographic regions and from all age groups. Perhaps one under-discussed age group in the epidemic, however, is high schoolers — specifically student athletes.

Young athletes are often prescribed opioid painkillers for sports injuries, which can not only relieve pain, but can also cause euphoria, according to Narconon.com.
