The airline disaster 77 years ago on the Blue Ridge Mountain

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — It can be so quiet in the mountains, the air still and calm.
The ridge overlooking Jefferson County is no exception much of the time. Silent and sentinel-like, the trees stand guard as they have for millennia. A natural quiet, occasionally interrupted by the sound of a bird, the footsteps of a deer, or the creak of an old branch of an ancient tree.
But on the rain-soaked, overcast afternoon of June 13, 1947, that mountainside peace was shattered.
