FAIRMONT — A flash flood that swept through the city Sunday left streets looking like rivers and displaced about 50 residents of a West Side apartment complex.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey also amended a previous state of emergency declaration originally issued for Ohio County to include Marion County after local officials connected with his office.
“As flash floods continue throughout North Central West Virginia, emergency officials are on the scene in Marion County at a partial apartment collapse,” Morrisey said. “State resources are being dispatched to the region immediately. Please — stay off the roads. Do not underestimate the strength and speed of these floods. Pray for our friends and neighbors during this challenging time for our state.”
At least five people have been reported dead due to flooding in Ohio County.
While there were no reports of any deaths among the residents who were rescued by Fairmont Police and Fire Department officers, one woman reported that her dog had drown and one other residents had two cats that drowned. The north side of the Fairmont Village apartments at 1116 Locust Ave. collapsed from the deluge of water.
