HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University’s decision to pull its football team out of the Independence Bowl has left some fans in a lurch.
Cindy Machmer purchased tickets to the Dec. 28 bowl game in Shreveport, Louisiana, to see the Thundering Herd but is now struggling to get her money back after Marshall’s decision, which the university said was due to an insufficient number of participating players left after the transfer portal opened.
Machmer is a lifelong Marshall fan and alumna who played both tennis and volleyball for the university. She bought her tickets Dec. 9, soon after Marshall’s bowl invitation was announced.
“Of course, disappointment,” she said of her initial reaction to Marshall’s decision to not participate in the bowl. “But … after the disappointment kind of wore off, you kind of understood why. When you have 20-some kids going into the portal, it’s basically the safety of the team, and I understood that.”
She spent about $80 each on the tickets with a total price of $162.55 and also bought a parking pass in the silver lot for $30.
