Days into a statewide strike of teachers and school service personnel, Gov. Jim Justice returned to his campaign theme of “investing in education” and promised teachers a 5 percent pay raise. Even though the state Senate was not initially aboard on that commitment, it came around days later.
By Tuesday, the legislature and the governor had both approved the pay increase for the school employees, and even expanded it to include all state employees. The stoppage concluded after nine school days were lost, and will now have to be made up.
The means that, to afford the pay raises, some budget cuts may occur in other areas. But the outcome was the right thing to do. …
