CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Jefferson County delegate is asking the state Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) to extend the March 1 deadline for the PROMISE Scholarship until after the end of the statewide teacher walkout.
Delegate Jill Upson, R-Jefferson, a member of the House Education Committee, has sent a letter to HEPC Chancellor Paul Hill asking the deadline be extended until seven days after the strike has ended.
“I’ve been hearing from my constituents that, because of the statewide work stoppage that began Feb. 22, some students have not been able to meet the deadline to apply for the PROMISE Scholarship,” Upson said. “I don’t think it’s fair that students should suffer because of circumstances beyond their control.”
