Following the announcement, Phillips, currently a registered Independent, will change his party affiliation to Republican and file to run for the congressional seat being vacated by Evan Jenkins.
“I’m running because I want to bring southern West Virginia values to Washington, D.C.”, said Phillips. “I will fight every day to grow economic opportunity for our region and state. I cherish our right to bear arms. I will stand up for our conservative religious beliefs. And, I am a true friend of West Virginia’s coal and energy industries.”
“Congressman Jenkins has done an incredible job and leaves big shoes to fill”, said Phillips. “I look forward to the campaign.”
Phillips, who sports a license plate which says “COALDEL” (for Coal Delegate) and has fought hard for coal and energy in West Virginia during his four terms as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from Logan County.
