CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Just months after voters elected two new justices to the state’s Supreme Court, lawmakers are considering a bill that would change how justices are chosen in future elections.
The House Judiciary Committee OK’d a modified version of House Bill 2008 Wednesday morning. The bill would require a runoff election if no Supreme Court candidates receive at least 40 percent of the votes in an election.
Neither of the two newly elected justices, both prominent members of the Republican Party, were able to secure that share of the votes in their respective races last November.
