West Virginia students, parents and teachers are faced with a single bill moving through the Legislature that would provide a yet-unspecified amount of new public school funding, but also do much more.
Among other things, it would weaken longer-serving school workers’ job protections and their unions while transferring funding from increasingly empty public schools to charter schools, religious and secular private schools, and homeschooling.
The 144-page bill would give school employees their promised pay raises and other benefits, but also make it harder to strike.
The state Senate Education Committee passed the bill Friday, the day after it was revealed. The public had little time to read it. …
