WV News wins several awards at West Virginia Press Association Editorial Awards event

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — WV News publications had several award winners in the Editorial Awards announced Saturday at the West Virginia Press Association Advertising Awards ceremony.

“WV News produces more original local content than any other media in West Virginia day in and day out.  Our skilled and talented editors and reporters produce the best in community journalism each and every day in print, digital and social media platforms,” said WV News Publisher Andy Kniceley.

First-place editorial award winners across the divisions included:Division 1 (The Exponent Telegram): Staff, Special Section-Sports.
Division 2 (The Weston Democrat): Staff, Video.
Division 3 (The Preston News & Journal): Staff, Video.
Division 4 (Mountain Statesman): Staff, Editorial Page.
Division 4 (River Cities Tribune & Register): Staff, Front Page; Staff, Special Section.


The Spencer Times Record, under the operation of the Hedges family at the time, collected 11 first-place awards, nine second-place awards and nine third-place awards.

WV News and Owner/Publisher Brian Jarvis acquired the Spencer Times Record on Aug. 1.

Other awards collected by WV News:

The Exponent Telegram: Andrew Wilson won a second-place award for Headline Writing. Sonia Swisher collected a second-place award and a third-place award in Illustration, Cartoon or Graphic. Staff won third-place awards for single issue and single section. Matt Harvey received a third-place awards for Legal Affairs Reporting and News Columnist.


The Weston Democrat: Noah Jeffries won a second-place award for Video. Staff won second-place awards for single issue and sports page(s), and third-place awards for special section and sports page(s). Sonia Swisher earned a third-place award in Illustration, Cartoon or Graphic.

Preston News & Journal: Jacob Martin won a second-place award for News Feature and a third-place award for Governmental Affairs Reporting. Staff won a second-place award (with Krista McHenry designing the cover) for Special Section, and a third-place award for Front Page.


Mineral Tribune & News: Emily Gallagher won a third-place award for Sports Photography. Staff won an award for Single Issue.


Jackson Herald Star: Staff won a third-place award for Special Section, with cover design by Betsy Brigner.


Record Delta: Noah Jeffries earned a second-place award for Governmental Affairs Reporting. Staff won second-place awards for Single Issue and Special Section, and a third-place award for Sports Pages.


River Cities Tribune & Register: Staff won a second-place award for Sports Special Section; and third-place awards for Sports Special Section, and Video. Sonia Swisher won a third-place award in Illustration, Cartoon or Graphic.
