MEDIA ADVISORY: McLaughlin Air National Guard Base to conduct Active Shooter exercise

The West Virginia National Guard will be conducting an active shooter exercise between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025, at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base in Charleston, West Virginia. The purpose of the exercise will be to test Air and Army National Guard response protocols and procedures during an actual active shooter scenario on base.

During the exercise, civilian emergency management and first responder agencies may be involved. As such, local citizens may see an increased presence of law enforcement and/or other first responder presence in or around the area of McLaughlin Air National Guard Base. Sirens, alert systems, and communications (radio) traffic will likely be utilized and access to the base may be impacted or limited during the duration of the exercise.

This advisory is to inform the media and local officials of the purpose and extent of the exercise, to notify local businesses/facilities that may be impacted by exercise activity, and to notify the public to alleviate any worries, concerns, or misconceptions resulting from the exercise.

No media coverage is requested.
