WVPA to share photos from boys state basketball tournament

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Press Association plans to provide photos from the opening rounds of the West Virginia State Boys Basketball Tournament, which starts Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.

The WVPA will provide two action photos of each of the six games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Newspapers wanting additional photos, photos of fans, coaches or cheerleaders, or help with game stories, should contact Don Smith, executive director of the WVPA, at 304-342-1011, ext. 160, or [email protected].

“During the girls tournament, we realized our member newspapers had a need for the photos,” said Don Smith, executive director of the WVPA. “We will try to provide the same coverage for the boys tournament. “The photos are being provided as a member service. There is no charge. We encourage our newspapers to use the photos in print and online.

All game photos and cutlines will be emailed to editors through the WVPA Sharing Network and posted on wvpress.org. Photos from the morning sessions will be emailed  in the afternoon each day. Photos from the evening games will be emailed after the game and by half time for the 9 p.m. games. Editors and sports editors should note that the start times of games, and distribution of any photos, is not guaranteed.

The WVPA does not plan to cover the championships on Saturday as most newspapers with teams involved in the championship games staff the events. Smith does encourage member newspapers to share photos upon request from other newspapers. He also asks those member newspapers staffing the event to email one photo to don [email protected].  He will distribute those photos on the WVPA Sharing Network.
