W.Va. drivers can now use digital proof of insurance

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia drivers will now have the option to show digital proof of insurance.

The new law takes effect June 11. Passed by the West Virginia Legislature during the 2015 regular session, the new law (S.B. 273) gives motorists the option to show digital proof of insurance.  Many car insurance companies have mobile phone apps available to their customers to show proof of insurance.

“I am pleased that West Virginia will join a majority of other states that allow electronic proof of insurance.  West Virginia drivers will no longer have to rely on a paper certification of insurance.  They will now have the convenience to utilize an app on their phone,” stated Del. Steve Westfall, R-Jackson.

West Virginia joins more than 35 other states that have adopted similar state laws.  Law enforcement officials and magistrates anticipate the new law will help reduce paperwork.

“Overall, this will ease the burden on West Virginia drivers as well as the members of law enforcement.  With this law going into effect it will reduce the strain on the court system and will be a benefit to our local law enforcement officials and magistrates,” added Westfall.
