University of Charleston launches new commercial to showcase student experiences

West Virginia Press Association

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – While it can be challenging to tell an entire university story in a minute or less, the University of Charleston (UC) recently did just that with a new commercial that began airing in the fall of 2024.

In July, UC hired alum Jeff Barnes and his marketing agency to tell its story. Barnes is a 2005 inductee to the UC Athletic Hall of Fame as a baseball player. He played professional ball for the Texas Rangers from 1981-1983 before turning his sights on marketing and advertising, creating The Barnes Agency in Hurricane.

The commercial was shot at various campus locations and features UC students, faculty, and President Marty Roth. It highlights many aspects of UC student life, including the university’s virtual reality lab, s’mores at the firepit, kayaking on the Kanawha River, classroom interactions, and more.

The storyline was created and refined by the UC Office of Marketing and Communications, the Office of Admissions, and the President’s Office.
