More Than 2,500 West Virginians Will Benefit from Investment

SCARBRO, W.Va. – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development West Virginia State Director Ryan Thorn has announced that USDA is investing $1.7 million to improve water and wastewater infrastructure for the White Oak Public Service District (PSD) in Fayette County.
“Having clean, reliable, and safe water isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity,” said Thorn. “Infrastructure improvement projects such as this serve as the foundation for future economic and community development. This investment will have a lasting economic impact providing new opportunities and ensuring that future generations can make a good life right here in rural West Virginia.”
White Oak PSD was awarded a $1,058,000 low-interest loan and a $597,000 grant through Rural Development’s Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program to make upgrades its wastewater treatment plant in Glen Jean. Specifically, the funds will be used to remove the secondary biological treatment bypass and install a lift station. Since 2021, Rural Development has awarded $7,024,000 to White Oak PSD to make improvements to the facility.

This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, tribal and high-poverty areas.
