Media Advisory: WVU to kick off ‘Point Pleasant W.Va., Branding Community’ event this week

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A kickoff ceremony is set for Thursday in Point Pleasant, the latest community for BrandJRNY, a West Virginia University Reed College of Media community branding initiative.

WHO: Rita Colistra, WVU Community Branding Initiative project director; David Smith, WVU visual journalism teaching assistant professor; WVU students; Point Pleasant Mayor Brian Billings; Leigh Ann Shepard, chairperson of the Point Pleasant Branding Committee; and representatives from Appalachian Power 

WHEN: Thursday (Sept.12)

  • Opening speakers: 5:30 p.m.
  • Community Workshop: 6 p.m.

WHERE: The Meeting Room, Mason County Library, 508 Viand Street, Point Pleasant

A kickoff ceremony will take place in the Mason County Library followed by a visioning workshop where community members can share ideas and opinions about Point Pleasant and its brand. 

WVU, Appalachian Power and Point Pleasant representatives will be available for media interviews after kickoff remarks. They will share information about the community branding process, which involves WVU faculty and students working with Point Pleasant community members to identify the town’s unique qualities and create a communications plan and creative materials for long-term brand management. Representatives will also touch on the potential economic, tourism and the educational outcomes of this project. 

Attendees who participate in the full visioning workshop will have the chance to win Splash Pad party passes, kayak rentals from Krodel Park, 2020 Bikes & BBQ tickets, a WVU prize pack and WVU football tickets.

The event is free and open to the public. Point Pleasant-area residents are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided. 

The initiative is funded by the American Electric Power Foundation.
