CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Maj. Gen. Bill Crane, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, cordially invites our media partners to the retirement ceremony for Brig. Gen. Michaelle Munger at the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History Culture Center, located at the State Capitol Complex, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. East, Bldg. 9, Charleston, West Virginia, on Friday, November 15, 2024, beginning at noon.
Brig. Gen. Michaelle Munger was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on December 2, 2021, making her the first ever female to become a general officer for the West Virginia Army National Guard in state history.
Over her 30-year career, Munger has served in every component of the U.S. Army – active duty, U.S. Army Reserves, and the Army National Guard. She was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1994 and has served in various roles of increasing responsibility, including working for the National Guard Bureau and at the Pentagon.
Brig. Gen. Munger assumed her current duties as Special Assistant to the Adjutant General, West Virginia Joint Force Headquarters – West Virginia, on October 1, 2021. As the Special Assistant to the Adjutant General, she assists the Adjutant General in special projects such as the Joint Diversity Executive Council, assisting to create an organizational culture where diversity is valued as a personnel readiness emphasizing mentorship and career management throughout the Force, and any other initiatives in support of the West Virginia National Guard.
She is currently employed as a civilian as a Senior Environmental Scientist out of Gloucester, Virginia.
Brig. Gen. Munger was commissioned in the U.S. Transportation Corps in May 1994 through the Reserve Officer Training Course at Christopher Newport University, Newport, Virginia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology w/minor in Spanish. She earned her first Master of Science in Environmental Studies from California State University-Fullerton, Fullerton, California. Brigadier General Munger completed the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS), National Defense University, Joint Forces Staff College, Normandy Hall, Norfolk, Virginia, where she earned her second Master of Science in Campaign Planning and Strategy.
Her military awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, and the recipient of the Military Order of St. Christopher Award
The retirement ceremony will be a celebration of her faithful service to the Nation, and to her enduring legacy within our West Virginia National Guard and our Armed Forces.
