CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Union leaders who represent public employees will hold a press conference on Wednesday to discuss the Legislature’s responsibility to stabilize the West Virginia Public Employee Insurance Agency.
All members of the media are invited to attend the event, which will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Culture Center reception area, and is planned in conjunction with the West Virginia AFL-CIO’s annual Legislative Conference.
“The state-administered health insurance plan is vital for public employees – including local first responders such as police, firefighters, and ambulance drivers, corrections officers, teachers and school service personnel, highways and sanitation workers, among others – who dedicate their lives to serving our communities,” WV AFL-CIO President Josh Sword. “Our state’s success depends on the well-being of its workforce, and right now its public employees are suffering because of rapidly increasing healthcare costs. Now is the time for legislators to take steps to stabilize that system.”
Among the speakers will be representatives of the United Mine Workers of America, Professional Fire Fighters of West Virginia, the WV Troopers Association, Communication Workers of America, WV School Service Personnel Association, American Federation of Teachers-WV, and WV Education Association.
