Hope in the air: Mountaineer Recovery Center, local organizations celebrate recovery month in West Virginia

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Martinsburg mayor Kevin Knowles stood in front of a group crowded around War Memorial Park and posed a poignant question Sunday afternoon: “Where else can you go and be in recovery and be the Mayor of Martinsburg?”

He credited directly his work in recovery, the support of those who mean the world to him and God for his almost 24 years being clean.

Knowles was one of many speakers Sunday afternoon at the first Recovery in the Park event, hosted by Mountaineer Recovery Center, in honor of Recovery Month.

With tables stationed with information about the many options to help find recovery around the area and speakers sharing their first-hand knowledge of recovery being possible, it was an afternoon filled with hope, showcasing all walks of life who are affected by substance abuse.

“I’ve walked in it myself,” MCR community outreach coordinator Terry Bullock said. “Oct. 23, next month, will be 12 years for me, and then to have the opportunity to be a component for Mountaineer Recovery Center and bring this to fruition is definitely a privilege because I’m always saying, ‘Recovery is for people that want it.’ It’s not for people that need it.” …
